Welcome to our revamped and resurrected blog. We have integrated a couple of our old blogs together, so this blog now goes back to our travels to Africa and SE Asia in 2006 and includes our time spent living in Malaysia in 2011-2012.
With 9 days to go until we fly out to the Bahamas, we are madly trying to wrap up our work lives and our home life. As I sit here and type this blog, I probably should be packing boxes. We are very excited about this new adventure. We are taking 6 months off from our jobs, pulling the kids out of school and looking to live simply and spend lots of quality time together. My parents have given us the amazing opportunity of using their 40 foot sailboat in the Bahamas for the next 5 months. After that, we plan to fly to Nicaragua and spend 6 weeks backpacking around there.
Last winter, I was reminiscing about the time my family spent cruising and sailing in the Bahamas when I was a teenager and dreaming about doing something similar with our family. I grew up sailing in the summers around Ontario and when I was 14 my parents took us cruising for two years, which has had a huge impact on my life and planted that seed of travel. Paul has no prior sailing experience, except what he has managed to accumulate from sailing last summer and reading lots. So my parents are really taking a leap of faith in loaning us their sailboat and we are so thankful of their confidence in us. We will spend the month of February learning the ropes of the boat from them – anchoring, navigating, sailing, maintaining, etc.
On this blog we are hoping to share and document this 6 month adventure. Most people on hearing our plans are envious of us leaving the Canadian winter behind, however others question why anyone would want to live on a small sailboat with 3 young children. We hope we can share all the joys and also the challenges that the next 6 months will bring.
We fly into the southern Bahamas – Georgetown, Exuma. We have no fixed plans and are looking forward to moving at whichever pace we choose. Please like our Facebook page – we will post regular updates and pictures there. We are even so ambitious to hopefully create some video blogs using our new GoPro.
We will spend the 5 months sailing to the northern Bahamas – Freeport, where we will fly on to Central America. I am looking forward to revisiting many places that I visited as a teenager, over 20 years ago.
We have had lots of questions about the boat – s/v “About Time” and I’m sure one of our first blogs once we get down there will be to introduce you to our home for the next 5 months.
