Sometimes those who love to travel take their home for granted. I know I am guilty of this all the time. While I love being wrapped up in all the comforts of home, it never seems nearly as exciting or interesting as new destinations.
Living as an expat in a city that is new to you allows you to really get to know and appreciate your new home. It is one of the things I love the most about expat life. After spending nearly 2 years living in Melbourne, Australia, I have come to love this city. To the point that I was feeling pretty bummed about leaving the city that is regularly voted the most liveable city in the world.
A friend who has been an expat shared how they had family photographs taken where they had lived overseas as a way of remembering their time there. While they are now back home, she loves to look at their family photos of that special time in their lives. After hearing that I knew we needed to organize some family photos in Melbourne.
You might remember that in November I took an impromptu trip to Singapore with just Gavin. We had wonderful photos taken by Wanderloud’s Kaye there and I had recently seen beautiful photos from a Wanderloud photographer in Melbourne. Within a day we had scheduled a photo shoot with Michelle from Wanderloud.
Wanderloud – Travel Destination Photographers
Wanderloud has built a global network of photographers all over the world to connect you with a destination photographer. They are run by a lovely Aussie couple Benieke and Ben, who are super passionate about capturing travel memories. Wanderloud captures amazing photographs of your special trip or in our case, special photographs of a city that will always be special to us.
To say that we were over the moon with how well our photos turned out, is an understatement. Anyone with kids knows that it can be incredibly difficult to get good family photos. Sometimes every one is looking great, but one kid has his eyes closed. Or maybe one has decided to put up bunny ears on the other kid. We ended up with so many incredible photos from our shoot with Michelle.
In fact, I have started sharing them on social media and the feedback has been amazing. Michelle caught a wonderful mix of candid, individual, sibling and family shots. But most importantly the photos totally say Melbourne with iconic landmarks as the backdrop.
But I will just let the photos speak for themselves.
Planning your Photoshoot
Wanderloud has photographers available in 40+ places around the world. Often you have a choice of photographers and you can browse through their galleries to find the style you prefer.
Next you will need to decide what package you would like. They have sessions ranging from an hour (one location) to 4 hours (multiple locations). We did the Big Wander, which was 2 hours.
Once you are connected with your photographer, you will work with Wanderloud and the photographer to develop your story board. Wanderloud is big on using photography to tell a story and they want to make sure you get photos that tell a story: a special trip, special occasion or special place.
“It’s like hanging out with a friend that takes great photos”, Wanderloud proclaims on their website and that is exactly what it is like. We literally wandered around the Melbourne CBD, chatting and making friends with our photographers while taking photos in great locations.
Our photographers were really great and patient with the kids and as parents themselves, knew when the kids needed a break. They let the kids take the lead in setting up different poses and locations.
Wanderloud provides seamless communication between you and the photographer. They checked in with us right after the shoot and the very next day we had a sneak peek photo that got us really excited to see the rest.
Within 5 days, we were able to see all of our photos on their really easy-to-use website.
The Wanderloud website is how you will receive your photos. A gallery of photos is created for your photoshoot which you can share with others. You can also easily download your photos from the site, with the provided pin. One of the things I love the most about Wanderloud is that you have full access to all of your photos. We can now choose which ones to print and frame, use them on social media, etc.
I am so thankful to have some beautiful family photographs that are made even more special because they are set in Melbourne. A few years from now I would love to have family photographs done again in some exotic locale.
So next time you are on vacation, consider using a destination photographer to make sure you capture those special moments. There really is no better souvenir!
