Here, you can spend your days strolling around the cobblestone streets of Dubrovnik, exploring the ancient sites of Split, or sailing to some of the most picturesque islands. Whatever you wish to do, there’s something waiting for you in Croatia.

Here’s a guide on where to go in Croatia with the whole family.

1. Zagreb

Zagreb, Croatia’s capital city, offers numerous fun attractions suitable for families with kids, from majestic green parks to fascinating historical sites. While most visitors would overlook Zagreb in favour of the more famous cities like Split or Dubrovnik, you’d be surprised to discover fun, family-friendly attractions if you take the time to explore.

The gorgeous King Tomislav Square is the perfect place to begin your exploration of Zagreb. It sits at the southeast corner of a series of parks called the Green Horseshoe. After admiring the views, walk north to reach Nikola Subic Zrinski Square, another pretty square with a vast green space for your kids to play and run around.

If your kids are into animals, take them to Zagreb Zoo, home to various wildlife species, including lions, red pandas, lemurs, wolves, wallabies, and more. There is also an area where kids can pet some animals, such as goats and sheep.

Experience local life by visiting Dolac Market, the city’s most famous open-air market, where you’ll find a long line of stalls selling everything, including trinkets and souvenirs. You and your kids will enjoy roaming around as you witness busy shoppers and vendors going about their daily life.

2. Split

Home to beautiful beaches, fascinating historical sites, and scenic parks – Split is an excellent destination for families with diverse interests. Active families will find stunning nature trails to hike, while those who prefer to relax can spend days lazing at the beach. Moreover, families who want to experience cruising in Croatia can start in Split, where many cruises depart. Cruising is suitable for families looking to explore many islands in one visit.

Split is famous for its historical sights. And although the Diocletian’s Palace is the most popular, there are many other sights to check out for families who love history. There’s also the Klis Fortress, which has 2,000 years of history and sits on a hilltop offering breathtaking views.

For those who want to relax and play with their kids at the beach, visit Bačvice. It has sun loungers, where you can relax while your kids play at the beach park with trampolines and slides. Bigger kids can enjoy water sports like kayaking and paddle boats.

Hiking at Marjan Hill Park is another fun activity for families visiting Split. It’s a lovely park with nature paths, stunning viewpoints, and playgrounds. There’s also a small zoo where your kids can see ponies, donkeys, and sheep.

3. Zadar

Zadar may be small, but it certainly packs a punch. It’s one of the most family-friendly cities in Croatia, offering a mix of activities, from exploring ancient roman ruins scattered around the city to enjoying water activities. The medieval walled city sits on the Adriatic Sea and has a charming Old Town that’s a joy to stroll around.

Going on a walking tour is the best way to learn more about the city and visit its highlights. There are family-friendly tours with a knowledgeable local guide who will take you to places like the Roman Forum and the Archaeological Museum.

The Riva Promenade is a fun place to explore with the kids. Full of locals and tourists waiting to watch the most romantic sunsets, it’s also home to a playground and fair, a perfect place to have fun with the kids. Let the kids jump at the trampolines or play at the slides and swings while you stroll around to check out vendors selling souvenirs.

4. Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik is a mesmerising city and a favourite of families visiting Croatia. It has become famous for being the filming location of the Game of Thrones. Moreover, Dubrovnik offers many fantastic places for families to explore, including the Walls of Dubrovnik, Mount Srd, and Lapad Beach. Another reason it’s popular with families is that there are many great places to stay in Dubrovnik, including spacious, family-friendly accommodations, perfect for families with kids.

Walking the walls of Dubrovnik is a must for families. Dating to the 7th Century, it’s the city’s most iconic attraction, where kids can climb and walk through the forts and towers connected by these walls.

Riding the Dubrovnik cable car to Mount Srđ is another activity the whole family will love. It’s a scenic ride to the peak, where you can enjoy unrivalled panoramic views. Families with big kids who don’t mind hiking can hike to Mount Srd, which should take less than an hour.

After sightseeing around the city, take the kids to Lapad Beach, a perfect place to swim and play with your little ones since it has shallow turquoise waters.

5. Pula

Pula is a charming city on the island of Istria, famous for its well-preserved buildings dating back to Roman times. But aside from its historical sights, Pula has many other things to offer for families, so it’s worth checking out this city when you go to Croatia for a family holiday.

For one, it’s home to AquaPark, Croatia’s first waterpark, famous for having one of the largest wave pools in the Mediterranean. It’s a massive park with thrilling rides and fun shows guaranteed to delight kids of all ages. Another family-friendly place to visit in Pula is Adventure Park Pula, an outdoor amusement park with zip lines and challenges, perfect for adventurous kids.

Of course, Pula also has its share of beautiful beaches. One of these is Ambrela Beach, a great place to hang out with your kids, thanks to its calm waves and vast expanse of soft white sand.
